Title

Body Worn Location Enabled Technologies In Education & Training

-

Abstract

-

The rapid uptake of body worn, location enabled, mobile network accessible solutions for rich media creation and connection in extreme sports, military and medical sectors is now also challenging the mobile learning / distance education stereotype. The application of point-of-view technologies in all education & training sectors is opening up new possibilities for areas like recognized prior learning, remote delivery and workplace assessment.

-

This presentation will present a range of examples of applied use of point-of-view technologies in a range of vocational training contexts and engage participants in discussion as to their perception of the implications for the ’shape’ of learning as organisations come to grip with the socio-ethical implications and infrastructural needs that this technology imbues.

Having joined the fraternity of the iPhone I am constantly amazed at what I can now do that I couldn’t before.

I can update calendars and email people, I can search the web, I can now justifiably waste time as I learn all about my new toy.

I can even have alcohol fueled fanciful conversations with other iPhone users about the wonders of the new gadget and what might be.

One of these occurred after Mobilisethis09 in Darwin last October. The gist of this conversation was that wouldn’t it be nice if someone created a clip on cover for the phone with a telephoto lens and tripod attachment.

Dreaming you might say !

Who is going to waste their time developing a gadget like that……certainly not Apple. Why would they alter what they perceive as being a perfectly good camera.

Well guess what ! ?

They must must have been an eaves dropper in on that conversation because look what I found on E Bay.

It seems that the land of super low labor costs in the far east have made exactly what we were talking about, and it only costs $40US delivered to your door.

So impressed was I in the ability of the manufacturer to respond so rapidly to our fanciful ideas that he must have heard us talking about, that i just had to go and order one straight away.
After it has arrived and we have had a play we will update this post with a report on its quality and functionality.

Happy iphoning

John Eyles and I met in New Zealand and shot a number of short video’s ( at John’s instigation ) which delved a little deeper into the psychology of body-worn POV equipment most particularly framed within the educational context of immersive learning.

Admittedly I wander a little bit in this short and nicely edited piece of documentary style interview however the general gist of where we were heading to is ever more apparent. What I’m keen to explore with John is as to the plethora of instructional POV which mashed with other mainstream static, handheld or vehicle mounted video.

The main point of this video that John has kindly shared with us is that POV body-worn camera technology essentially equips the viewer with a “true” sense of the skill, task or human action subset of knowledge required to repeat or emulate such a recording.

I’m keen to wok with John to explore a range of scenarios in 2010 that could be taken to a commercial, educational & technology oriented conclusion for customers as diverse and forward thinking as New Zealand Telecom.

Stephan Ridgway from TAFE NSW Sydney Institute has informed us of his latest social bike ride with the Sydney HOG Chapter ride from Trivett Harley Davidson to Gerroa via a stop at Stanwell Tops. He has filmed this ride using the ContourHD POV camera mounted to the handle bar of the motorbike. It was filmed in HD 1280×720 edited in Adobe Premier Elements 7.0 and exported to HD format then uploaded directly to Youtube with a total file size of 1.2 gb.

Stephan reports that ContourHD will be bringing out a full 1080HD version of the camera sooner than later.

You can see the mount arrangement at http://www.flickr.com/photos/stephanridgway/4263071171/

Likewise check out gnuchris’s mate screaming around on his motorbike out there in the Aussie bush.
