EDUPOV : Leigh Blackall

Leigh Blackall has confirmed today his trip to Australia from New Zealand to meet with a range of education, training and industry representatives sponsored by EDUPOV in late March 2009.

As to the sites where he will venture and the purpose of the visit is to;
……interact with training bodies ( of all descriptions ) to interrogate and inform a discussion around point-of view technologies from a conceptual framework perspective, from a pedagogical viewpoint, from an open standards and open user-generated resource creation perspective, from an available technologies perspective and from any other angle that arises.”
Leigh has been given the opportunity to explore the concept with an EDUPOV kit in tow and to meet with people over here who have to date had some contact or exposure to the whole POV idea.
Very loosely here’s what Leigh’s thinking will be his itinerary of sorts when he’s here;
- Receive the POV pack in the mail and test and blog results
- Fly Dunedin – Sydney morning of Wednesday 25 March
- Workshop SIT afternoon of 25th
- Travel to Orange morning of 26th
- Workshop Western afternoon of 26th
- Break 27, 28, 29 (wedding in Orange. Visit grand parents in Jervis Bay)
- Travel to Illawarra 30th
- Workshop Illawarra morning of 30th
- Travel to Sydney 30th
- Workshop DET (shudder) afternoon of the 30th
- Fly Sydney to Dunedin morning of the 31st
- Blogging all the way
I’m liking the whole idea that Leigh will give it back to us as it is and by the end of this journey to and fro he’ll have a better idea of where POV might fit in with the NZ crowd ( who incidentally are already on the go with POV ).
Leigh is a good public speaker, has a great grasp on the realities of what it takes for a concept to be sustainable and thanks to our investors our ability to bring this renowned educator to Australia is timely.
Besides, I’ll get to see my TALO friend at my wedding which is an added bonus…..
POV : Carpentry

Last year in 2008 I was given the opportunity to work with the TAFE NSW MECAT team at Western Institute predominantly working on developing and implementing the use of the WIT Moodle platform…taking tradies into some online delivery modes.
The journey was long and steep and continues to challenge me as I have a big investment in it’s success and continue to work with them on the development of using such elearning solutions to better equip teachers and students in their transition to trades based REAL applications.
It’s a blended learning solution as it is a blended learning politic
I met this cool character along the way – Richard Ross - who’s foresight lead us into trialling the use of an ELMO POV kit courtesy of Vicki Marchant from Illawarra TAFE NSW. Richard is pictured here wearing a customized trades application for the SUV camera in workshop situation. ( yes….hang on…..he was wearing glasses and took them off for the photo for some reason )
Richard recorded some great , fast instructional videos that demonstrated the use of a range of power-tools from the perspective of the user…unlike other flash driven simulation videos that are from the view of somewhere else. The ELMO kit then went onto Broken Hill and I’m yet to find out what sorts of POV was captured out there…very interested in knowing what was usable and what was entirely experimental )
I’m hoping that the MECAT faculty will continue to explore the context and the potential of resource creation and POV connection using the technology for what it’s best for. I’d like to see out on the open web examples of branded POV generated resources and I’d love to see the transition to where a teacher can easily convert 3GP generated video into iTouch playable learning resources for use in the Faculty.
500 x 5 minute instructional videos will easily fit on an 8GB iTouch. Likewise so would they play beautifully through a IWB from a portable hard-drive.
The investment to record is simple. I’ve talked long and hard enough with Mike Gibson and Sandra Gray about the concept and the potential for marketing so hopefully this will prompt them ( and many other TAFE NSW sites ) into thinking and implementing something seriously in this area of the e-learning development for both teachers and students.
Oh …and by the way EDUPOV are well on the way to becoming preferred suppliers in a commercial context of ELMO products.
Will pick the quality assurance side of things up markedly.
Micro View : A Reflection

This photo was taken by Leo Gaggl on his way through from Adelaide at the Elearning08 gig in Sydney. You’ll notice in the photo that there is me with two laptops and a micro-POV camera transmitting my fingerprint to remote participants in far off places.
It was a demonstration of how simple it is to turn a biological or microscopic scenario ( scene ) into a valid , live and interactive training situation. The concept is not new….medical sciences have been at it for years with some amazing high grade live country-to-country video connections matching trainees to live operations for example.
The difference here is that the EDUPOV team can outfit one-to-many or many-to-one micro connections for a fraction of the price utilizing some amazingly simple, robust , mobile and sustainable solutions which are as easy as connecting a peripheral to a USB port.
Have a think about it…what ways could you see micro-POV coming into play in your training environment ?
Are you a pathologist ?
What sorts of blood slides could be examined both live and LIVE
